PIANO TUNING
WHAT DOES PIANO TUNING INVOLVE?
Sheffield Technician & Piano Tuner will bring a skilled ear to adjust the strings to a correct length and state of tension so that they vibrate at the correct pitch. With a specialised tuning lever, Sheffield Technician & Piano Tuner makes very fine gradations of movement on the wrest pins around which the strings are coiled, thus bringing the strings into tune one at a time.
WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY PIANO TUNED?
A piano is made primarily from wood, and all wood shrinks and swells with changes in temperature and humidity. When this happens the strings also change in length, changing the pitch to be either too high (sharp) or too low (flat). Some strings may be more affected than others, altering the sound when played to something less than pleasant.
An expert tuning by Sheffield Technician & Piano Tuner is not expensive. We will tell you in plain English what work we are doing to your piano – and above all we won’t charge a fortune.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY PIANO NEEDS A PITCH RAISE?
A piano will need a pitch raise if the strings have changed in length so much that the sound has moved very far from where it should be. This usually occurs when a piano has not been tuned for a considerable length of time or has been exposed to large rises or drops in temperature or humidity. Sheffield Technician & Piano Tuner will perform two tunings, a coarse tuning followed by a fine tuning, to stabilise the piano. This can take between 2 to 3 hours. Having a piano tuner set your piano to the correct pitch is especially important if you play with other music instruments or singers. Under these circumstances the piano needs to be at the standard concert pitch of A (440Hz). A pitch raise by Sheffield Technician & Piano Tuner is the way to achieve this.
